The most misleading of the cakes, this sourdough coffee cake is amazing, even though there’s no coffee in coffee cake. Why you ask? Well were not sure but were guessing because it goes great with coffee. But what cake doesn’t go great with a cup of joe.
With or without coffee this sourdough coffee cake is incredible, it is soft and fluffy, sweet and crumbly. But most of all its just plain delicious and pretty easy to whip up. And after you’ve put in the work you’ll definitely deserve a coffee break.




MAKE YOUR OWN SOURDOUGH STARTER
If you want to know how to make a sourdough starter or feed a sourdough starter, this is a great place to start, most importantly have fun with the starter because the possibilities are nearly endless.

Sourdough Coffee Cake
Ingredients
BATTER
- 2 cups AP flour
- 2 Eggs
- 1 cup Sourdough starter (active)
- 1 cup White sugar
- ½ cup Cooking oil
- 1 tsp Vanilla extract
- 1 tsp Baking powder
- ½ tsp Baking soda
- ½ tsp Salt
- ¼ cup Milk
TOPPING
- 1 cup AP flour
- 1 cup Brown sugar
- ½ cup Butter (softened)
- 2 tsp Cinnamon
- 1 tsp Vanilla extract
- ½ tsp Salt
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F.
MAKE BATTER
- In mixing bowl add 2 cups flour, 1 cup white sugar, 1 tsp baking powder, ½ tsp baking soda and ½ tsp salt and mix well.
- In second mixing bowl add 2 eggs, 1 cup sourdough starter, ½ cup oil, 1 tsp vanilla extract, ¼ cup milk and mix well. Add dry mix to wet mix and mix well.
MAKE TOPPING
- In third mixing bowl add all topping ingredients and mix very well, make sure to mix the softened butter until there are little crumbly bits.
MAKE CAKE
- Grease 9x12" baking pan, add batter and spread evenly in pan. Then sprinkle on topping mix.
- Bake at 350°F for 45 minutes or until done.
- Use the toothpick test to see if its done by piercing the cake with a toothpick and making sure it comes out clean, if there is still batter on the toothpick then keep baking your coffee cake until the toothpick comes out clean with no batter on it.
- Let cool 5-10 minutes before slicing. Enjoy!
- Store the cake in the pan covered with aluminum foil or plastic wrap at room temperature for a couple days, or freeze for longer storage.
